The details of some easy, effective and innovative methods of teaching Classical Karnataka music at the primary level consisting of relevant exercises sung along with single or two beats of metronome in the ‘Matrakala’ of four units per second is furnished hereunder. It is always essential to practice with Metronome. Refer to ‘Sangeetha Svararaga Sudha’ written by Akella Mallikarjuna Sharma for the details of some of the relevant exercises. Even though the preliminary exercises are provided in both ‘Mayamalavagowla’ and ‘Shankarabharana’, it is desirable to teach them in the rAga ‘Shankarabharana’ for better understanding. It is important to note that the exercises have to be taught without Kampitas and Gamakas till the initiation of Gitas. The students are expected to practice putting beats with both the hands for Chaturashra- gati and single right hand beat for Trisra-gati while rendering (aloud) the respective excercises. ------------------------------------------------------- 01.Primary tests & Laya-exercises (11 items): ------------------------------------------------------- 001 - Inspiring-instrumental-music in Chaturashra-gati (4): This should be utilised in the first instance to test the ‘Laya-instinct’ of the aspirants. The students who can follow all the different varieties of the rhythmical-music by putting beats accordingly should later go through the next test of ‘Sruthi-instinct’. The students who are successful in both the tests should only be imparted this training in music. 002 - Inspiring-instrumental-music in Trisra-gati (3). 003 - Metronome-beats - 120 bpm: Two ‘Metronome-beats’ per each second carrying four units in total which is called ‘Maatraa-kaala’. The students should follow this by putting the right hand beat uttering aloud ‘ki-ta’ which is consecutively followed by the left hand beat uttering aloud ‘ta-ka’ thus totaling to‘ki-ta-ta-ka’ of four units. This should be utilised regularly by the students while practicing all the exercises of Chaturashra-gati. However, this left hand beat should NOT be utilised while practicing the exercises of Trisra-gati. 004 - Metronome-beats - 60 bpm: One ‘Metronome-beat’ per each second carrying four units which is called ‘Maatraa-kaala’. The students should utilise the 3rd & 4th items in their regular practice. 005 - Jati-alankara-4-1: The 1st Jati-alankara of Eka-tala (ki-ta-ta-ka) in Chaturashra-gati. 006 - Jati-alankara-4-2: The 2nd Jati-alankara in Rupaka-tala (ta-ka | ki-ta-ta-ka). 007 - Indian music is considered to have evolved from the musical chanting of Sama Veda. Music, like the Vedas is considered to be the path to self-realization and hence is divine. The study of music, like Vedas, needs discipline and dedication. It has to be practiced in the early hours of the day when the mind assimilates to the best of abilities. Music should also be initiated at a tender age so that the individual can be put to rigorous training and practice, which are the pre-requisites of a good musician. It is important to note that this fine art has to be pursued in isolation. It is an established fact that ‘Laya’ and ‘Shruthi’ are the core components of music. This novel, innovative, easy and effective method of teaching music establishes the same and enables the aspiring students to attain the required standards. To inculcate a sense of Shruti and facilitate acquaintance with Laya, it is desirable to expose students to the constant hearing of inspirational, rhythmic, instrumental music provided in the CD. It produces the best results if they are exposed to such music right from their childhood. As per this method the candidate must first undergo the ‘Laya’ test by following the teacher while he/she puts beats with both hands on his/her thighs in accordance with the music provided. The candidates who succeed in this test should further be subjected to the ‘Shruti’ test in which the candidates have to reproduce the different notes sung by the teacher with the help of the Casio. The candidates who successfully pass these tests should proceed to the Laya exercises. The Laya exercises begin with the uttering of ‘ki-ta-ta-ka’ using the right hand beat for ‘ki-ta’ and the left hand beat for ‘ta-ka’ on their thighs, corresponding to the 120 bpm of metronome, i.e., four units per each second. Treating the practice of this ‘ki-ta-ta-ka’ as ‘Eka-tala-jati-alankara’, they have to learn and practise the remaining six Jati-alankaras of the seven principle Talas, Eka, Rupaka, Mathya, Dhruva, Jhampa, Ata & Triputa, in this seriatim, putting beats with both the hands (without Talangas). Later, they have to sing the Saralee-svaras of Mayamalavagaula-raga / Shankarabharana-raga and simultaneously play on the Casio with its in-built metronome rhythm. The keys of the Casio should be labeled with the solfa syllables i.e., S, R2, G2, M1, P, D2 & N2 etc., and the Metronome-beats should be adjusted to the Matra-kala i.e., @ two beats per each second to facilitate easy practice. Subsequently, they have to learn and practise all the Saralee-svaras, Janta-svaras & Datu-svaras of Mayamalavagaula-raga / Shankarabharana-raga putting beats with both the hands in accordance with the Metronome-beats. Further, they have to learn and practise the Svara-alankaras in the above seriatim, in Lalita/Hamsavinodini-raga putting beats with both the hands. Later, while learning Gitas in the Ragas, Shankarabharana, Mohana, Shuddhasaveri, Kalyani & Malahari and the Svarapallavi in Hindola-raga they have to sing the ‘Svara’ first followed by the respective ‘Akara’ and ‘Sahitya’. The students should me made to sing all the Gitas without Kampitas and Gamakas. It should be noted that the Gitas should be rendered with both the hands. Consecutively the crucial ‘Talangas’ are introduced along with the three degrees of speed using the right hand. Later, they have to practise the Saralees, Jantas, Datus and Alankaras in other non-Vivadi Melas. In the next stage, while practicing the Special-laya-exercises on one hand, on the other the students should learn and practice consecutively the svara, akara and sahitya of the Adi-tala-varnas in the ragas, Natakuranji, Kambhoji, Darbar, Shankarabharana, Kalyani, Begada, Todi, Saveri and Svarapallavi in Hindola. They have to be practised in the same seriatim @ 2-units per second. Further, the Ata-tala-varna and Svarajati in Bhairavi-raga should also be learnt in the same manner. While teaching the Varnas, the inter-relation of the relevant notes of each Varna should at first be demonstrated by the Teacher in a phased manner. At every level of learning the students should listen to and strictly follow the items provided in the CD at their residence in the absence of their Teacher to get much acquaintance with them. Apart from the duration of his/her training in the class, the teacher should plan and give some pre-recorded material, which enables them to practise independently. However, they have to be properly guided so as to minimize their mistakes in the teacher’s absence. In this method of teaching, the teacher, initiates and motivates the students into deeper learning. This is the most crucial step and is highly effective in making the students independent in all aspects of learning. The students are expected to practice daily for a minimum of two hours till the completion of Gitas and four hours from the beginning of Varnas. This will quicken the process of learning and after the completion of these Varnas, they will be able to sing / play the Svara, Akara and Sahitya of the notated Kritis etc., mostly on their own. Similarly, a regular practice of 6 hours a day, after the completion of 10 or 12 Kritis along with the specified Laya-exercises, will enable them to sing / play Svarakalpana with Muktayis. In addition, they will be able to render brief Ragalapana within a span of six months after the commencement of Kritis. This is a unique feature of this modern teaching method and it has been successfully implemented on a number of students, producing gratifying and amazing results. The items in the CD are classified into 9 headings comprising of 481 tracks catering to the needs of the students. Apparently, the sets of 10 and 15 Gamakas prescribed in our ancient treatises are inadequate in contemporary music. Karnataka music is one of the most complex systems in the world and the need of the hour is to document and safeguard every subtle nuance. Hence an attempt has been made to categorize and document the various Kampitas and Gamakas (60 varieties) along with illustrations. The audio-clippings of the same have been provided in the CD. Similarly twenty seven nuances of Kaishiki-nishAda are furnished in PDF files along with audio-clippings. The symbols assigned are in concurrence with the travel of the sound (of the note). This attempt is the first and foremost in the annals of Karnataka music literature. The Primary-lessons, Gitas, Svarapallavi, Varnas and Svarajati are available in two different Shrutis so that the students can choose the convenient Shruti. The Varnas and Svarajati are also provided with symbols. Some of the Jati-muktayis are sung and illustrated. Consequently, the aspiring students of music get well acquainted with all these forms of music and their intricacies. They will be equipped for deeper and higher learning of music. It goes without saying that this fine art has to be pursued with utmost dedication and diligence to attain great heights. Visit http://youtube.com/msakella for the video clippings of some Lalya-exercises and Violin-exercises. This CD is an improvised version of the previous AMS-Easy Methods. * * * * *
